(4 September, 2020)
- The Guyana Council of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities (GCPD) was today represented by Mr. Ganesh Singh, Program Coordinator, and Mr. Cecil Morris, President of the Guyana Society of the Blind at the Office of the Minister of Public Works, Hon. Bishop Juan A. Edghill.
During the discussion, Mr. Ganesh highlighted concerns that affected the movement and mobility of persons with disability. Some of the areas raised were the safety of wheelchair users and those who are visually impaired at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
The Hon. Bishop Juan A. Edghill after conversing with the representatives from GCPD charged his Technical Team from the roads and bridge design, traffic lights, and the Ministry’s Task Force to conduct an assessment on the concerns raised by Mr. Singh and Mr. Morris. The Technical Team is expected to provide a report within one week to Minister Edghill, so as to, facilitate the ease of movement, especially in the busy city areas.
Following from the Ministry’s technical report, works will be done to facilitate over 6,000 plus individuals who are a part of the disability organization.
The representative further congratulated Hon. Bishop Juan A. Edghill on his appointment and expressed gratitude for a fruitful discussion.
